John Heuer, SpIrInCo Team Member |
In late 2008 John Heuer, a resident of Pittsboro, NC, was asked by Jim Lindsley to join the SpirInCo team. Mr. Heuer is a past president of Bell Tower Toastmasters International. He was the chairman of the UNC Employee Forum representing over 7500 non-faculty employees of UNC-Chapel Hill. John was the first recipient of the UNC Physical Plant Directors Excellence award for the design of the UNC School of Public Health Mayes Teleconference Facility. In 1999, Heuer co-founded the UNC Sustainability Coalition of campus faculty, staff, student and administration representatives. The mission of the Coalition is to incorporate the elements of economic feasibility, social equity and ecological integrity into the operations of the University. Mr. Heuer had recently retired from Architectural and Engineering Services at UNC Chapel Hill after 26 years of service, specializing in classroom design. The last thing on Heuer’s mind was involvement in any kind of business undertaking until he saw a model of a SpirInCo structure and a demonstration of how easily, efficiently, and quickly a SpirInCo building could be enlarged. He was particularly enthused by the fact that no materials are discarded during the expansion process. Lindsley and Heuer have set about incorporating environmentally sound features into the already green SpirInCo concept, including alternate technologies to standard energy and utility use. One of the many assets that John Heuer brings to the SpirInCo team is his passion for improving Educational Opportunities.
Imagine a school structure that could grow or shrink in the original footprint with a minimum of disturbance! Current dilapidated schools could be stripped of hazardous materials, the buildings razed, and the debris recycled into components to build a living, breathing school. Such a school could be adaptable to changing school populations, harvest solar and geothermal energy, collect and heat rainwater for both domestic use and irrigation of campus grounds and gardens. Such a school would have extraordinary potential as a teaching model for the campus community. John Heuer’s many years of ‘real life, hands on’ involvement in smart design and Jim Lindsley’s constant ‘there has to be a better way’ aptitude will fuel a rapid launching of the recently incorporated SpirInCo. |
